How can you extend your driveway yourself?

Proper ground preparation is crucial for a long-lasting, well-draining driveway extension. The essential steps involve excavating the area to a depth of 6-8 inches, thoroughly compacting the exposed soil base, and layering with the appropriate gravel materials.
The tools needed include a shovel for excavation, a rake for leveling, a hand tamper or plate compactor for compacting the soil base and gravel layers, a wheelbarrow for transporting gravel, landscape stakes and string for marking the perimeter, and safety equipment like gloves and boots.
After excavating, the compacted soil base should be covered with a weed barrier fabric. Then, for a gravel driveway, add a 4-inch base layer of larger crushed stone, followed by a 2-3 inch middle layer of smaller crushed gravel, and finally a 2-3 inch top layer of pea gravel or stone dust for the surface. Each gravel layer must be compacted thoroughly using a hand tamper or roller. Proper grading with a slight crown in the center is also important for drainage.
By investing in the right tools and carefully preparing the base through excavation, compaction, and layering the appropriate gravel materials, you can ensure a stable, long-lasting foundation for your DIY driveway extension.
