Proper ground preparation is crucial for a long-lasting, well-draining driveway extension. The essential steps involve excavating the area to a depth of 6-8 inches, thoroughly compacting the exposed soil base, and layering with the appropriate gravel materials.

After excavating, the compacted soil base should be covered with a weed barrier fabric. Then, for a gravel driveway, add a 4-inch base layer of larger crushed stone, followed by a 2-3 inch middle layer of smaller crushed gravel, and finally a 2-3 inch top layer of pea gravel or stone dust for the surface.
